Askew Gallery is delighted to present Starch, a compelling exhibition by a group of artists featuring work by Louise Richards, which delves into the themes of domesticity, labour, and history. Featuring prints, video, photography, and performance, this multidisciplinary showcase invites viewers to reconsider the mundane as a source of creativity and cultural significance.

The exhibition is inspired by the historical context of the area, once renowned as a hub for laundries due to the abundance of fresh water from local springs and brooks.

Richards employs playful and resourceful methods, utilising everyday objects such as irons, ironing boards and starch.

About Louise Richards
Louise Richards is a London-based visual artist whose practice explores themes of domesticity and the everyday. Her work monumentalises and abstracts household objects and processes, transforming the ordinary into vibrant, bold artworks. A graduate of Central Saint Martins, Richards’ art spans printmaking, video, photography, and performance. Through exhibitions like Starch, Richards invites audiences to reimagine the ordinary and celebrate its artistry and cultural significance.

In her video Ironing she is seen ironing her face; this serves not only as a critique of the mundane task of ironing but also as a commentary on societal ideals of perfection, ageing and the pervasive alteration of images in today’s world. of perfection.

Quote from Richards

"With Starch, I wanted to explore the beauty and complexity of everyday domestic rituals—how they shape our histories, labour, and identities. The act of ironing, for instance, is both repetitive and transformative, much like art itself. By reimagining these ordinary gestures, I hope to challenge perceptions of domesticity and highlight the creative potential in the overlooked."
